I think I got some relief from this issue in 8.5.1 by turning off the
Outline auto-refresh.

That issue is gone in 9.0.

When I suffered through that in 8.5.1, any time I noticed any kind of
decrease in responsiveness, I'd restart RDP. Certain source types caused
the issue more than others (SQLRPGLE being one of them).

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Java heap space error

Yesterday I lost a bunch of changes that I had made to a source member (RDp
8.5.1). This is the first time that I can remember this happening. While I
was editing the member, every keystroke was making RDp temporarily lock up
and the heading at the top said "not responding". I tried to do a save but
eventually a "Problem Occurred" window popped up that said "Remote Systems
LPEX Editor Autosave has encountered a problem". The details of the message
said "An internal error occurred during "Remote Systems LPEX Editor
Autosave: Java heap space". I noticed that the memory use in the lower
right corner said 1010M of 1024M. I only had two (or three) source members
open at the time. When I responded to the message I think RDp closed. I
shut down and restarted my computer (I had re-booted in the morning before
opening RDp). When I opened the source member that I had been working on,
all of my changes were gone.
