Check out this page Paul http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27038175 and select the DB2 for i tab. On the RHS it identifies the release that various features are supported on. You will see that a significant number are marked with X1. If you look at the bottom of the page and fine the X1 reference you will see:

"X1 - Not supported when a connection is created by using only the IBM Toolbox for Java driver" - but no link, no explanation, nothing. That's what I was talking about.

Jon, have you got any examples of which features were unavailable with the default driver? I'm not quite sure what you mean.

I know that there are various "jt400" JDBC drivers and they sometimes have slightly different SQL features (especially between versions), so perhaps the default drivers with Data Studio have limited features and you can just download the "best" jt400.jar and use that? (Try http://jt400.sourceforge.net/ and/or http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v6r1m0/index.jsp?topic=/rzahh/whatsnew.htm for more details. Sorry I can't provide direct download links.) Obviously this is just for connecting to an IBM i, and you'll need other drivers for other database types.

I have a sound board application on my tablet that plays a nice "crickets chirping" sound, which seems appropriate for this topic which obviously nobody knows anything about... Sorry I have nothing of value to contribute, but at least you got a response! ;-D

Didn't get a response on this before so I thought I;d try again:

In the list of supported features of Data Studio for IBM i there are a significant number that are marked as not being available using the default driver. Sadly it doesn't tell you which drivers will support those functions or how to obtain them. Are they chargeable features or ???
