The word "REPLACE" indicates that your cursor is currently in Replace mode
instead of Insert mode. So as you type, you overwrite other characters on
the line instead of pushing the contents of the line (after the current
selection) to the right. (This is the most intuitive and matches SEU
functionality). But you can switch to Insert mode by hitting the Insert
key.

Thanks, one more question:
why does the word "Replace" remain in the status bar for a browse
session ?

Edmund,
is the "status bar" the first line which shows "Line x Column x
Replace" ?
on my v8.0.3 session, I see "Browse" to the right of "Replace" when the
session is opened for browse.

That change is not likely as the icon in the tab indicates which editor you
have opened the member with. This is Eclipse functionality and not in our
domain.
The indication that it is in Browse mode is in the status bar immediately
below the tab. But I grant you that you cannot tell by looking a tab this
is not active whether it is browse or edit.

That's a good one, Mark. Put in a RFE.

Edmund,
Is there a way to have the tab corresponding to a open source member
indicate when it's open for browse or edit? They both show a pencil for
me.
