It turns out that finding the name of an ASP is a couple of API calls
longer than finding its number. The ASP number is available through the
object APIs, but the ASP name has to be derived from its device
description. We considered using it, but thought that the performance hit
might be unacceptable. We also had to take into account the possibility of
renaming an ASP. That would be quite rare and difficult to do but
possible.

David

Thanks for explaining more. I do have another question.

Since IASPs are given a name, and their position in the IFS is not by
number, rather by the device name, could you have used that name instead
of the IASPs number? I have a feeling more people will refer to IASPs by
name rather than number.

Or can the name be added to a description somewhere? Maybe it is already
- I've not looked into this, sorry!!

Thanks again
Vern

A description of the support for independent ASPs can be found here:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21578353

There was a reference to it in the RFE and that RFE was referenced in
the
fix list. It should have been much more accessible from the readme.
We'll
try to get these types of articles more visible from now on.

With the support for iASPs users can have libraries of the same name
residing in several ASPs with only one accessible at any one time. It
became necessary to qualify the local temp file with the ASP number so
that RD Power would not accidentally upload (and erase) a file member in
one ASP from another ASP. That's the reason for the cache name change.
From time to time we find it necessary to adjust paths in the cache in
order to make sure that we don't have any aliasing problems.

This qualifier only is present for objects in libraries that reside on
independent ASPs (numbered 33 and up). If your data is on a basic ASP
(numbered 1 to 32) then that qualifier is not needed and is absent.

First, there is no real description of what support was added so I never
looked for any benefit. Plus, I guess it boils down to change. I had
filters set up for searching over the remote temp folders to perform
quick search and replace operations (I would open several to many
members so they would down load and then I can perform REGEX search and
replace in the remote temp folder). Now nearly all my filters have to
be modified. At first I could not understand why I was not getting
results from those filters.

As I said before I never had a problem working with our IASP. It's been
in place in our shop for a couple years now. Granted we only have one,
so there may be more difficulties with multiple but that was not
mentioned in the RFE.

Now that I am discussing this with you I finally looked around on the
connections panel and noticed the "Connection -> Set Auxillary storage
pool group" item. Mine is not checked. So this looks pretty
interesting if we had multiple groups. I can see if shops had more than
one IASP but allowed only one log on. However, why does my remote temp
folders need the IASP reference when I am not asking for it on the
connection panel?

Thanks, Matt

I am not familiar with the details of the support but will see what I
can
find next week.

What do you not like about the IBM i ASP support?

I do remember reading this RFE but nowhere in the details did it mention
why it needed to "support" IASPs. I never had problems working with our
IASP. Just attach the proper JOBD to the connection and voila IASP was
available.

Can this support "fix" be turned off? I do not like it.

Thanks, Matt

IBM i ASP support was added in RD Power 8031 as a result of a request
for
enhancement.

Matt

I suspect that it has nothing to do with iASPs - it is probably an
ActiveX Server Page - same acronym as our Auxiliary Storage Pool.

ASP is a Microsoft technology - handled natively in IE.

I think!!

Sometimes!

C:\Wkspaces\8.0\WKSP\RemoteSystemsTempFiles\400DEVL\QSYS.LIB\PGMT.LIB\00

Notice the 00033.ASP reference. Does anyone know where it came from?
And how to remove it in favor of the past form. We do use an IASP
but
it never appeared in anything RDP before.

I have created several "File Search" "Working Set" filters to perform
quick search and replace operations. With this alteration I now have
to
modify them all. If can remove the 0003.ASP from the folder path then
I
will be happy.

Any help is appreciated.
