Well the lock would have to be able to be broken. Otherwise someone checks out a member, goes on vacation, and that source member is untouchable until they get back from vacation.

And it would need to degrade gracefully ... as lots of people use older tools with more current OS versions.

Nah, I think the current member locking mechanism works just fine.
