As it happens, Craig is a coworker of mine. His tool does work pretty well. We whack him about the head and shoulders when it doesn't. <grin>

I know you said not to mention tools - I have to anyhow, especially a
free one. Craig Rutledge has a utility for converting from fixed to free
format. You can get it as part of his tool set at www.jcrcmds.com - and
you get the source code, so you can modify it to your requirements and
preferences.
