*IPDS files can contain graphics that can't be displayed by a text-only
tool. WRKSPLF strips out what it can't display and shows the rest. The
mechanisms used in RSE aren't smart enough to do that - they just throw up
their hands and refuse to display anything. The WRKSPLF display can be
misleading for some spool files, so there is a little justification for not
showing something that's wrong. It's inconvenient most of the time, though.

Just in case anyone was interested, I resolved the problem regarding
viewing non QPJOBLOG spool files. The other spool files had a printer
device type of *IPDS while the QPJOBLOG had a printer device type of *SCS.
When I changed the file to be created as *SCS I was able to view it in
RDp.
I still don't understand what the difference is and why WRKSPLF could view
it but now I know how to make RDp work.
