I agree with the suggestions on using a much later version.

Also, I've seen people give up on using WDSC / RDP without learning most of its useful features. Here's some features where each one alone justifies it for me in my mind:
1) Many more lines of code on the screen at a time.
2) It remembers the source members I'm working on or using for research after a reboot. I currently have 40 open source members in my RDP tabs. For me, this more than makes up for the slower member open vs. SEU.
3) The Selection / Filter selection ability shows only lines of code using the selected text, and does so showing many lines of code on the screen at a time. Allows a quick glance as to how a field or object is used in a program.
4) Fast file searches against only source members in your workspace. Although, I wish this feature could be filtered down to only members with an open tab. Perhaps it can and I haven't found it yet.
5) The outline feature.

There are dozens of other features that justify its use for me.

What errors do you get when you compile?

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Beginners Advice Requested

I've been an IBM i developer/analyst for a long time, but I've never worked anywhere (until now) that used WDSCi or any of the newer variations. I have used Eclipse a little bit for some other outside development, but never in conjunction with an iSeries box.

I've just started working somewhere that has WDSCi version 5.1, which I know is a bit old. I can use the tool to access and modify program source (RPGILE, CL, etc.) without any problem. The problem is, that's all I can do inside WDSCi. I think a few people tried to research further, but gave up. It seems like it is hardly worth the trouble to open WDSCi if I can't compile, debug or take advantage of any other functionality of the tool.

I would love to get this working and fully functional, but I have no idea where to start. I have tried to compile a program, but it did not work (and it's a short, simple program that should compile with no problem). Not sure if the problem could be system oriented (lacking proper PTF's)or setup oriented (my initial iSeries login library list would not work if I wanted to compile any programs; can this be adjusted in WDSCi setup). Does anyone have any good advice or can you point me in the direction of the proper manuals/documentation? I've tried some searching on-line, but have come up empty to this point. Hoping if we can get this working and display it's worth, can maybe justify any expense of properly upgrading the tool.

Thanks,

Ray
