I've got a User Key Action set up for the action "oneSpace". This truncates 2 strings together leaving one blank space between them. Try this out with your own key combination (I use Ctrl+Shift+Up) and see if it gives you what you want.
I'm not sure where I learned of this (probably here), but sounds like what you are looking for.
