There are some settings that don't stick when you change the default.

Did you use

set default.prefixArea off

That's supposed to work, but there do seem to be some things that we don't control. There is also an "install" setting - maybe try

set install.prefixArea off

You can maybe help yourself by hitting escape when you start out in an editor, then use the up/down arrows - there is a history in that command line. Not sure if that then applies to each edit window in your current session.

Nope, always comes up with prefix area.

There's a setting in the preferences for LPEX Editor, a check box for
"Prefix area" and whether I uncheck it or check it, seems to make no
difference.

I think you could write a plugin that changes your profile but I gave up
after my profile for WDSC 4 didn't work for 5. One of those upgrades
anyway. The last working profile I had with customisations was with
Code/400.

Nevertheless, you can issue a command to hide the sequence numbers every
time you open a member... While editing, press Escape, which moves the
cursor from the source code to an unlabelled box at the bottom of the
source. Type

set prefixArea off

and press Enter. Case is important. Press Escape to get back to the
source. There may be a way to do that with the mouse but I'm keyboard
oriented. The keyboard I'm typing this on was made in the US by IBM in
1984 and it goes clickety-clack all day :-)

Hope that helps. I'm feeling less and less helpful as the years roll
by. I found it by going to the command line (Escape) and typing help
set (because I could not remember the exact parameter.) That slowly
brought up a browser which gave me a list of parameters. prefixArea
seems so obvious in retrospect, doesn't it? LOL
