Of course locking your PC may not be enough....

In the last place I worked a favorite tactic was to spoof emails...

In fact I just happened to be the victim of the most successful of these dastardly deeds. <grin> I
got an email that quite convincingly appeared to be from an IBM Rochester HR person telling me about a
position they had open and wanting me to apply for it. Now the key thing was, I had been in Rochester
about a month before at the User Centered Design center to provide feedback on the v5r4 Electronic
Software Delivery and configuration of the iSCSI attached xSeries.

I was of course honored and exited about the opportunity, called the wife, showed the email to my
co-workers, ect.

My co-workers lead me along for a while before telling me the truth. At least I hadn't tried calling
the number for the HR rep. My co-workers said that it was an "adult" number (hope that gets through
the filters :)

My co-workers an I considered getting back at the perpetrator, a long-time consultant, by waiting till
he was around and then having me start walking to the bosses office while they went to the consultant
and told him I was on my way to tell off the boss and quit. But we decided he wouldn't believe that.

It's not so much that it's likely, as that it's possible and is really
easy to prevent, so why not lock the PC when I'm away? FWIW, I have no
problems leaving my keys and wallet in plain view on my desk, so it's
not a hostile environment, but I can see how it might have seemed like it.

Not only that, but other programmers have been known to joke around by
sending messages to other IT staff from the sessions of people who
didn't lock them when they left. For example, "Hi everyone, ice cream
on me at break time." :)
