David,
I had some issues with WDSc version 6. I don't know if WDSC version 7
will solve your CODE problems or not, but WDSC version 7 was much better.
Like Joe replied, EGL is unbundled from version 7. However, you can
still download the trial of RBDe (Rational Business Developer extension)
here:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/r/rbex/?S_TACT=105AGX15&S_CMP=DLMAIN
You can also find it by going to
http://www.ibm.com and searching for RBDe
trial download. However, I've found that the answer I want is not usually
the first result returned by searching all of IBM--in this case I believe
it was about the 3rd or 4th one down. WDSC version 7 is still supported
and will be supported until 2010, I believe. Version 7 is targeted at
V5R4 as far as syntax checking, etc. I would go ahead and get the upgrade
to version 7. If your company has a SWMA, the upgrade to WDSC 7 should be
covered by that. Version 7 was a vast improvement over version 6. Version
7 won't be a trial version for you although the RBDe will be. The future
to keep doing EGL will be RDi-SOA which carries a $2000 price tag.
We're on V5R3 until next spring and IMO at this point, I haven't seen
enough in RDi to make it really worth the $795 per seat. It is a little
faster loading, but basically the same for server-side edit/compile/debug.
We've got quite a bit of COBOL code and the Application Diagram has a few
shortcomings there. The screen designer preview looks promising, but it
also has some shortcommings--especially with windows and subfiles. I
don't know if I'll be able to swing our organization into paying for RDi
let alone RDi-SOA. I'll have to wait and see.
I think it's time to write another complaint letter to Sam Palmisano and
see if we can at least shake an exchange of ADTS entitlements for RDi
entitlements out of the tree. IBM is *really* shooting themselves in the
foot (maybe even the head) with that one.

[WDSCI-L] WDSc Version
Hi,
I have to say I'm a bit confused.
I'm working on WDSc version 6.0.0.1.
We have OS V5R4.
Do I have the version of WDSc that was distributed with V5R4 ?
I understand RDi will replace the version 7. I don't want to
download the trial version, because I don't think my company will
pay for it afterwards (Sadly 99% of our developers have stuck with
PDM/SEU).
If I managed to get version 7, I'm wondering for how long it'll
work. On my version 6, I have problems with DDS, code designor
doesn't start. Worse still, I'm trying to get started with EGL and
getting a lot of errors when I start the server. The updates for V6
don't seem to be available anymore.
