Joe,
I think that it is a perception issue or, more probably, an issue of inertia. People are using / used to Windows even with all of the flaws.
We just bought a boatload of new PCs recently. I "suggested" that we might want to get Linux PC's, use Open Office, etc. My boss has a Mac at home so he's not wedded to Wintel by any means. Being at the bottom of the totem pole, I wasn't privy to the decision-making discussion (or even if there was one), but I'm just guessing that management didn't want to invest in something "new."
That is, if there were a boatload of Linux (or Mac) PC's out there (somewhere) the demand for Linux-aware products (RDi, Client Access to name a couple) would probably be higher. By the same token, if these products were already Linux-aware, then the demand for Linux PCs would probably be slightly higher. Chicken-Egg conundrum.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] RDi and Linux
In my session at Rational, George Farr asked the audience who thought
that having RDi on Linux was important. Only one or two hands went up.
Although this really wasn't a session on RDi, it was on RDi-SOA, and the
audience was more non-i people than i people, it was still a little
surprising to me.
I then began to wonder whether my own personal anti-Microsoft bias is
really skewing my perception. Personally, if I were running an IT
department I'd be very interested in a pure Linux network. With the
exception of a couple of specific-use programs, I don't use Windows-only
products anymore and I'm pretty happy. My biggest issue today is that I
have to use Windows for RDi.
On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being very important and 1 being not
important at all, how would you rate the importance of having RDi
running on Linux?
Joe
