Jon,

Would it be prudent for IBM to offer to run CVTRPGSRC over all of JDE's code
for them? I know there are some logistics issues for delivery, etc... but
for a small amount of effort by IBM, a large number of JDE customers could
be moved away from the legacy compilers?

Just a small PR investment could positively impact our community??

Wait, wait, wait... are you telling me that *current* JDE software,
the
stuff they sell you and charge support for, is still not ILE? Gz.
They
couldn't even be bothered to run CVTRPGSRC over their code? Well,
maybe
now they'll finally update.

Welcome to my world Joe. I spent years trying to persuade JDE to
switch. Their programmers wanted them to switch, but they never
did. Then the "sunsetted" World and so that appeared to be that -
but then they were taken over by PeopleSoft and they appeared to be
interested in moving forward - but that ball had only just started
rolling when in came Oracle. After a while Oracle decided to
revitalize World and the ball appeared to be rolling again - but for
whatever reason it seems to have stalled again - I've heard nothing
for a long time.

Here's the good bit - a couple of times we persuaded IBM execs to
raise the subject - the answer invariably came back as "We have
converted some code to RPG IV and will continue to convert as and
when it makes economic sense."

The truth? They had converted one program. The "economic sense" was
that it became too large for the RPG/400 compiler to handle and it
had proved impossible to further reduce the size of the program!
