I agree that the core idea is to accomplish that goal. But in briefly
discussing this with some coworkers, who are quit tied to non ILE and SEU,
they of course see it as some plot against the world, so to speak. I have
for some time been using and promoting WDSCi and ILE is the only logical
method of programming for me. Unfortunately, at least in my shop, I am a
minority. I mean we still have active development(not bug fixing, new
programs) on VARPG(which IBM has basically killed off how long ago now)
and RPG400. I guess what I am saying is I agree with the goal but am
unsure the path will be all good. I expect a good bit of resistance in
the community and to a certain degree worry that resistance will cause
other more serious issues that may affect the future of "our" platform.
All that being said, it is about time in my opinion, IBM can not in the
long run remain competitive when they are constantly dragging old
technologies onto new systems just because we the community can not / will
not upgrade ourselves. About time they started pushing us down the path,
just my 2 bits.

This is all news to me, and while my first reaction was "aw crap.." Joe's explanations and a little
thinking have lead me to believe that this is probably going to be a good thing.

Given the ease at which you can convert RPGIII to RPGIV and the productivity of WDSCi, seems like it
may provide the push needed to go from SEU and RPGIII to WDSCi and RPGIV.

It will be interesting to see how the costs shake out.

Okay, all you gloom and doomers - calm down. The costs for the
compilers have also been revamped, and those have been broken apart as
well, basically into ILE and non-ILE components. The prices have been
lowered so that, for a single user on a P05, you will actually pay LESS
than the current bundled cost, and a lot less if you get off the stick
and convert into a pure ILE environment.

On the other hand, those of you who insist on staying in the old world,
you have two choices: pay less and stay in the past, or pay more and
migrate to the future, then pay less when you're done migrating.
