Hi Vern, you are correct. You can't start a second service job while
debugging the same job. Fortunately, in the program I am debugging a work
file (in QTEMP) is populated then displayed on screen.
I ended debug and ran the program again and used RUNJOBCMD to view the data
from a second green screen session once the file had been built.
I was able to get a view of the data as desired.

On the second point you can STRSRVJOB on a batch job. I use this all the
time to debug batch jobs while they are running.

WDSC has no special privileges that other iSeries apps don't have - QTEMP is
still tied to a specific job - and WDSC is not running an interactive job,
especially the one that is building the temp file.

RUNJOBCMD might even have some problems, because it uses STRSRVJOB to get a
command handler - and you can't STRSRVJOB on a job that is in debug from the
job issuing the STRSRVJOB - and is STRSRVJOB even allowed in a batch job?

It does not use a break message handler.

This is a most curious question!!! Thanks!

Vern

Thanks Kevin, this does work but I was wondering if there was a way to do
this within WDSC.

Google for RUNJOBCMD. This lets you run commands in other peoples jobs.
If you run an interactive command it pops on their screen, so be wary of
that. To look at a file in QTEMP, just run a CPYF out to a library you
can see. If you change the type on the COMMAND parm to *cmdstr, you can
prompt on the command you are entering.

You don't, without some effort. I have seen utilities that can allow
a
job to peek into another job's QTEMP, but these require break message
handlers to be registered to the job before they work. These are
usually
done in a startup job registered in the user profile....

Albert York wrote a utility many eons ago called DSPUSRSCN, that used
these same facilities (break message handler, message-queues, etc.) to
capture the user's current screen image. This tool could be adapted
to
also access qtemp objects.....

I think this url should get you to the sourcecode for this utility....

If I'm debugging an interactive program which builds a workfile in
QTEMP
how
do I display its data in WDSC?

Thanks,

Rob
