I tried it "on the fly" today from the Installation Manager and it made it
about 2/3 thru (judging from the progress bar) befroe crapping out trying to
unzip something (? /samples was the final dir I think..) I'll have to read
and try again tomorrow.

This is a very common question. The answer is to use the IBM
Installation Manager.

The longer answer is that there are two separate updaters. The one on
the workbench is the Eclipse Platform updater (Help->Software
updates->Find and install). IBM can't get rid of this because it's the
way we add plugins from third parties like Arcad, Quantum (sp?),
Subversion, etc.

IBM built WDSC on top of Eclipse in a different way -- it's more than a
plug-in! In order to update the WDSC side of the house, you need to
fire up the IBM Installation Manager.

I know it doesn't help much, and I probably sound like a jerk for saying
it, but it's explained in the README. It's a rare bit of software that
you can (dare I say it?) expect to install before digesting the README.

The IBM web page is http://www-306.ibm.com/software/awdtools/wdt400/
Choose Product Support (right side) then WebSphere Development Studio
Client, Version 7.0.0.2 (left side) and finally the README link near the
top:

http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/awdtools/wdsc/v7/7002/documents/readme/readme.html
or http://preview.tinyurl.com/37palf

Section 2.2 describes how to update any previous Eclipse plugins up to
3.2.2 Section 2.4 describes how to use Installation Manager to install
the update.

I have a very serious question. Did you look at the Midrange FAQ or
Wiki before starting the update process?
