Subject: [WDSCI-L] V7 issues

Actually I think I tried the Install Manager first and then
had to uninstall because RSE would not load. The second time
it was from Help.

This is what is annoying, if the Help/Software updates
doesn't work then why is it there?

Have you bothered to learn anything about the product?

WDSCi is build on IBM Rational Application Developer product, which is itself
built on the open source
Eclipse product.

Help/Software updates is part of the Eclipse base, look at some of the other
threads here and you'll
see messages from other users using Help/Software updates to install/update
non-IBM plugins (Quantum)

Why IBM felt the need for Installation Manager instead of just using
Help/Software Updates like they
did in v6 is beyond me. I can say that setting up and using a local IM
repository has been a bit
easier than a local Eclipse update site.

I am going to upset a lot
of folks here with my next statement, IMHO RSE is an immature
product that was not vetted through production type
programmers on the AS400/iSeries/i5.

WDSC v4 was immature, v5 was good, v6 forward has been great.

My experience has always been that if thousands are using you product without
issue, but one is having
trouble, then it's probably not the application that's the problem.

It's not perfect, there are a couple of things I think are missing, but it's a
heck of a lot better
than CODE or SEU.

It has all the earmarks
of a complex video game with bells and whistles and hidden
treasures that if you succeed at level 1 and find all the
hidden treasures you advance to level 2 and so forth. At
level 3 the next version comes out and the treasures have
moved location and you have to go back and find them again.
Loading V7 and not being able to migrate the workspaces into
it was a bad move.

It is complex, but that's the price you pay for flexibility.

I migrated my workspaces with no trouble, ( 4 separate ones on 2 different
computers)

It took long enough to create them and
since the methods of setup changed it could take almost as
long to set new ones up again. As I stated earlier, I will
stay at V6 with the shortcomings, at least I know where some
of the treasures are here.
I'll wait for V8 or retirement which ever comes first. I am
betting on retirement.

Enjoy!

Charles
