I remember hearing of a light-weight version of WDSC, suitable for
laptops. Am I correct? If so, is it available for all versions, 5 through
7?
Mike, you're talking about WDSC Lite, which was available with version 6 of
WDSC. Basically version 6 came in three flavors: Standard, Advanced and
Lite. You pretty much had to choose which version you wanted to install and
you were stuck with it.
With version 7 of WDSC the installation process (via the Installation
Manager) is quite a bit more user friendly and customizable. You can select
only those components you need: for example, for pure green screen
development you can select only the i5/OS Development tools. This will
create a very small footprint version of WDSC, equivalent to the Lite
version of WDSC6. And then you can add other components later as you need
them.
Not only that, but WDSC overall is smaller, faster and less resource
intensive. I run on a very underpowered laptop all the time, and it works
fine. Startup is still nothing to write home about, but with a 768MB laptop
with a slo-o-o-w 5400RPM drive, that's to be expected. Once loaded, though,
WDSC performs pretty well.
