Thanks, the user key action helps, as does noticing the pluses (didn't see them 
until you mentioned them).  It still doesn't remember the filter string like 
CODE does, but I can get used to it.

I added a user key action to filter a selection.

Goto Window->Preferences
Click the plus by LPEX Editor then click User Key Actions
for key enter c-b and for action select filterSelection then click Set

now after selecting the text in the editor you can press Ctrl-b to  
filter on that text.
