The way I look at it is to simply evaluate how much time I spend trying to
find a solution vs. just buying a solid piece of software. It is a lot
easier for consultants like myself to equate that all out as I compare it to
hourly billing - it would be better to for me to just buy the software and
spend my time billing out hours vs. trying to find something for free.
Especially when the ability to try before buy is perfect with TextPad.

The ONLY thing I don't like about TextPad is it's 'Find' approach. I LOVE
how FireFox and LPEX do finds - non obtrusive text box and buttons at the
bottom of the screen vs. dialogs.

Point well taken Adam - of course, one could use TextPad for free, although
I do like to pay for shareware eventually. Just FYI - 10 seat site license
is about $240 - but that does not change your point about paying for the
conference.

Thanks
Vern

LOL Adam- $30! You must do editing of text files once in awhile. The
ability to do search/replaces with regular expressions, color syntax
stuff, clip libraries, all that.

Well, I've got Vim for that :) I've also used Programmers Notepad 2,
another freeware editor that is pretty great.

I'm not saying that $30 is too much - I might purchase something like
that for my own use if I didn't already have lots of great open source
software that more than fills my needs (I use Linux at home so there is
open source stuff available to do just about everything.) OTOH, at
work - $30 * 10 developers = $300, enough to send one of us to our
LUG's tech conference (basically a mini-Common). I'd much rather go to
the tech conference than buy a text editor when there are so many great
ones that don't cost anything!

I use it all the time along with
WDSC cuz WDSC has not got the good search/replace stuff - I can
format something so much more easily, even some RPG stuff, in
TextPad, then paste it into WDSC.

Yeah - I'd love to see regular expression support for replace in WDSC.
Find using regex is some much less useful when you can't use capturing
groups.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions of editors for large files - I'm
sure it will help others in the future!
Adam
