On further reading of the manuals, I found a shortcut key which helps if you have just changed a line in the region of where you press F3. You can then press Ctrl J to return to the last edit point which doesn't do what I was after, but is not far off. Unfortunately you cannot just overtype something with the same letter (prior to pressing F3) as it does not take the F3 then. However, if you move off the line having overtyped a letter and then return to that line and press F3, then Ctrl J works ok. Bit of a fiddle but can't see another way.
