user roles?

Has anyone had any success with setting up security using the deployment 
descriptors for their Java apps?  I have myself set as Administrator, but 
it does respect it when I use isUserInRole....  any ideas?  Would it help 
if I posted the deployment descriptor source?  Thanks,
