I am by no means an expert at administrating WAS but note that the iSeries deals with memory allocation very differently than a Wintel machine. When the company I used to work for was doing Websphere testing it was painfully obvious that if you didn't give the WAS instance dedicated memory poor performance was inevitable because it had to wait in line with the rest of the users on the machine to gain access to memory. If you are not needing EJB's in your J2EE app give the non-IBM Tomcat 5.5.x install a try. Basically just stick in in the IFS and configure the port you want it to listen to (there is more config stuff on the WEB400 list). I have had considerably better performance from Tomcat which I am guessing is partially related to the feature sets, but the simple fact of the matter is that WAS is way overpowered for a lot of iSeries shops. Or rather iSeries shops don't use some of the feature sets that make WAS appealing because a single iSeries is often stable enough and you don't need a "server farm" of iSeries servers with WAS on them. The above is based on my short experiences with WAS so please weigh accordingly, Aaron Bartell http://mowyourlawn.com/blog -----Original Message----- From: wdsci-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:wdsci-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Steve Simpson (AVR IT Dept) Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 7:58 AM To: 'Websphere Development Studio Client for iSeries' Subject: [WDSCI-L] iSeries - WebSphere - to be or not to be...... Importance: High All, I know that this question is specifically for this group but I think you're more likely to give me a better answer.... We currently run WebSphere App Server on our iSeries and 30+ branches connect to it. The performance despite numerous attempts at tuning is pretty poor. If I install a copy of WAS on an intel-based PC, setup the same portlets and don't tune the PC WAS server the performance is considerably better. What I'm getting to is which, in your opinion, is the best platform to run WAS on. We still run several web-faced apps as well as pure java-based portlets. I look forward to your replies..............
