What I'm wondering is if anyone has actually tried to do this outside of IBM, how much effort it took, were there any problem getting the server running on the Unix box, did it add value, how was response time, etc.

Although WDSC won't run on Unix machines, you can use RSE to connect to remote Unix machines and edit files on those systems. You need to install the RSE server on the systems you want to connect to. The documentation for it is provided in the Help, under "Connecting to Linux, UNIX, Windows, and iSeries servers" -> "Installing Remote System Explorer server components". Hope this helps.
