By V5R3 do you mean WDSc v6 ?

On my machine v5.1.2.5 also defaults to *NONE _but_ when I try to accept the
value it says no.

I _can_ simply key in the command as you show and it is fine.

Just to be clear.  I know what the command is _supposed_ to allow.  It is
the CL prompter in WDSc that will not allow me to leave the value set at
*NONE.  I'm just trying to find out if this is a common bug (i.e. should be
reported to IBM) or if it is a quirk of the systems I have tried it on.
