I must be missing something and I'm hoping someone will set me straight.

I created a DB server connection and (as per the dialog advice) specified
filters so that I only saw one schema (library).

This was fine except that there were no logicals, joins, etc. so I couldn't
see much to play with.

Added another filter (OR'd to the first) and refreshed. Nothing was
retrieved for the second filter.

Disabled the first filter and refreshed again. Only data for the first
(disabled!) one was retrieved!

Deleted the first filter - still only info for that was retrieved - even
though there is nothing about this scheme in the filters.

Finally "cured" it by creating a new connection with the new filter - which
proved that there was stuff in the library - but is not a good solution!

What gives? What on earth do I have to do to get it to pay attention?

I am on latest fix pack (.5)
