Deselect the variable before you try to create the d-spec.  I tried it with the 
variable name still selected and the pop-up menu is different than the one I 
get if the variable isn't selected.

I select my new variable, I hit the copy button to "put it in the copy
buffer".  I then right-click, I don't see anything about a new D-Spec.  It
does work going through the upper bar menu (Source-New-DSpec).

There's a D-spec wizard that will let you create a D spec on the fly
without leaving the spot where you want to use it.

1. At your current spot in the code type
       if somenewvariable > whatever
2. Put somenewvariable in your cut-and-paste buffer
3. Right click and select New > D-specification
4. Fill in the wizard fields
5. When you hit Finish, you're still where you typed the "if" statement
6. Use ALT-Q to have a peek at the new D spec if you want, and use ALT-Q
to return to your code
