I have a similar problem today. I use Win 2K and had windows updates waiting for me this morning and they've been applied and I've rebooted. Problem is that the startup splash screen appears and nothing happens. I closed all app's so only WDSC is in the taskbar. If I cancel WDSC via the task manager, the splash screen disappears and then I find the logon screen waiting for my sign on credetials hiding behind the splash screen. I've done this twice now and the same thing happens each time. This started happening today and the only thing different (afaik) is the win update I applied a few hours ago.
