Just my .02...

But I think it's better just to create an external wrapper program.

The effect is the same, but it is easier to follow the calls though your own
wrapper.

Also, you'd still benefit from being able to update the procedure in the
service program without effecting the call from the wrapper and thus your
VRPG program.
