I would say that it is a browser security setting based on whether the
page is local or from a server.
Why not just put a blank Word document or Excel spreadsheet on the server
and do a normal HREF to it. That will cause the browser to open the
document which would be approximately the same effect but without the
scripting?

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Launch PC-application from
webapplication (html)
I want to load Word / Excel from a webpage loaded by a webapplication
running on our Websphere Application Server.
I developed this page in WSAD where it runs ok. I have a Word_button
which, when clicked, launches the WordApplication. However, when I move
this page to the iSeries it doesn't work anymore.
Following error is shown:
...
Error: ActiveX component can't create object: 'WScript.shell'
...
This is the html-part
...
<script language="vbscript">
Sub Word_onClick
runcmd = "file://C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE"
Set WShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WShell.Run Chr(34) & runcmd
end Sub
Sub Excel_onClick
runcmd = "file://C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE"
Set WShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WShell.Run Chr(34) & runcmd
end Sub
</script>
...
<BUTTON type="button" name="Word" ACCESSKEY="W" style="font-size: 5pt;
font-family: Verdana">
<img src="/images/icons/word.jpg">
</button>
