You all might be interested in the article in MCPressOnline from some folks at IBM regarding the new WebSphere offerings. In it, they lay out pretty clearly the current and coming versions of both WAS and WDSC. http://www.mcpressonline.com/mc/1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx@.6ae62955 If you look closely, there's a new Sheriff in town. It's WDSc Advanced Edition for iSeries (WDScAEi, for those of you keeping score at home). Now, IBM haven't said much about WDScAEi publicly, but it seems that it has all the cool features. What are these features? EJB Support WAS test environments Struts support Additional Webfacing features Interesting, eh? Spin off the really cool features into a new version. Now, since there are two versions, it naturally follows that one of the following sets of statements is true: 1. The standard version is free for anyone who has the WDS licensed product 2. The advanced edition costs extra -or- 1. The standard version is included with the iSeries Standard box 2. The advanced edition is included with the iSeries Advanced bundle If the former, it means developers get to pay yet more money on top of software maintenance and support and the price of WDS in order to use the new generation of IBM tools. If the latter, on the other hand, it means you have to pay the interactive tax in order to develop web-based applications (including Webfacing). Or, IBM might just say "Oops, sorry for the confusion! We're not trying to make money off the programmers who are actually making the platform profitable. We promise we're not going to bait and switch you developers yet again. You can have whichever version you need to write the software that actually makes this box viable." Maybe they'll say that. I dunno. Joe
