As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Yep it's a good framework around which to build MS-Based Intranet Web
apps or to surface documents from a document repository.
We've built a Web Part that hooks our WebDocs software into Sharepoint.
Think of it as Microsoft version of Websphere Portal Server :-)
