ok, I will try to make a case:

any apps that interface with hardware like label printers, fingerprint
readers, docuiment scanners ...

apps that interface with reporting tools like crystal reports. your
data sources is a collection of xml documents. The documents are on
the local PC, on a USB drive or on the network. The client app shows
the documents in a treeview. Somehow, magically, you have a 2nd list
of crystal report definitions. The client app translates the xml
document data to a form useable by Crystal, then it runs the report.

Any kind of a menuing system where you need to run more than one type
of task - option 1 does something with email, option 2 starts a
backup, option 3 logs you onto a department server.

All sorts of excel based applications.

putting aside the learning curve of WPF, windows client apps have
fewer moving parts/layers than web apps. A windows client app
programmer needs to know WPF, .NET framework and C# to code a working
program. The web app programmer has to know ASP.NET, .NET framework,
C#, HTML, CSS and Javacript.

To install and run the first instance of a client app, you copy the
.exe file to the PC and run it. For a web app, you first have to get
permission to install on the server, you have to know IIS manager and
how to deploy to the web server. Not hard, but not trivial.

Sorry, but for the most part I see no reason to do thick-client
programming any longer. Everything should be in the browser! And no, I
don't consider silverlight to be browser programming! :-)

Subject: [SystemiDotNet] WPF how to video

a very good video on WPF programming.  Specifically it is about the
browser control, but it covers a lot of ground.

WPF is pretty good.  Kind of complicated, with a steep learning curve.
I think it is worthwhile to learn because it converges with
Silverlight.
