We would prefer to not have to punch a hole in the firewall, so to get
around this we are writing

two applications one for external use and one for internal use.

I assume my "external" you mean running on the web server in the DMZ and
"internal" you mean running on a different web server inside the second
firewall?

Our only ideas right now is to either export from the web database
daily and import into the

System i or upon approval of the permit, write the information to the
database.

If you're unwilling to open the needed ports from the DMZ to the
internal side your only option is to pull the data to the System i from
the remote machine, that's called polling J. But where's the data that
the remote machine is accessing? On a DB server in the DMZ? When you say
"approval of the permit" I assume that's something that happens on the
System i and should be reflected on the web site. That's pushing from
the System i to the web so it fits well in the firewall setup you have.

My recommendation, open the two or three ports you need from the web
server to the System i and be done with it.
