AR Payment allocation

Just wondering if anyone has done any work in the following area please;

We need to automate AR cash allocation from a file of remittance advices we 
receive.  Almost all of  the remittances are part-payments.
 
I know Lockbox is supposed to do this, but we already use it in a different 
business process and I know for fact it doesn't handle part-payments.   I'm 
told Lockbox function isn't "fully supported" in the UK, plus we are stuck at 
SP3, so there is little or no help available.

So, has anyone experience of automating allocations outside of Lockbox?
