Good point. I wonder if this is a one-way change. Can you go back to
the standard password if it doesn't work (provided you haven't created
any passwords that are longer than 10 characters)?

Read the section in the security manual about changing the password level.
It describes the checks that need to be done to move between password
levels. Be sure to check the cautions before you go to QPWDLVL 2.
