Dave,
Here is an example of an SQL statement that has a mix of hard coded and variable values.  The host variables are always preceded by a colon ':'.
Exec SQL                                      
   select substr(sxdata,1,32) into :hld_pcdesc
      from sycdx                              
         where sxcomp = 'I'  and              
               sxnem  = 'PC' and              
               sxrgn  = '*'  and              
               substr(sxcde,1,2) = :hld_pc;
