I agree. Using a program described file is definitely not ideal.

Did you try Peter's suggestion to define the data structure with subfields in position 1 for both records?

dcl-ds lLfDs qualified inz;
dcl-ds LF_REC01 likeRec(REC01 :*input) pos(1);
dcl-ds LF_REC02 likeRec(REC02 :*input) pos(1);
end-ds;
