I've always had MQ Server installed on the IBM i...

But it does appear that IBM offers a stand-a-lone IBM i MQ client.

I don't believe that there's a cost to the client, but it should be easy to
confirm.

I'm starting a new project where I will be required to communicate with

expecting to need to be a server.

In my 30+ years coding in RPG I've never dealt with MQ. The samples
don't look difficult but I'm having trouble determining what licenses
will be required to utilize it in RPG. If it's cost prohibitive I'll
probably go with another (java based?) client but I'm not sure where to
even start. I'm very comfortable with RPG. Java not so much. Any help
with my questions is immensely appreciated:

Is the full IBM MQ license necessary if just coding a client?
What licensed programs are required to use it on the IBM i?
Any suggestions outside of RPG, off the IBM i?

Thanks, Troy
