Which is of course why my strategy of using program-described mode only works if either (a) the program obtains the field definitions by calling such system APIs as QDBRTVFD, QUSLRCD, QUSLFLD, and so forth, or (b) the program is part of a closed system in which meta-data is stored independently, and format changes are tightly controlled.
But if either or both of those conditions are true, then program-described mode is absolutely wonderful.
