All very good ideas and I have used all of them (sort of, granny's been dead for >40 years). I remember once having an issue so I brought in my boss and, since he didn't know what the program was supposed to do, I had to go through the printout explaining what each section did. At one point I muttered, "Never mind; I see it." What?! It was 3-5 lines past what we were on, but typically I was looking ahead. But these days I'm working from home (alone), and it's a one-man shop.

And I have solved more than one problem by just going outside and sip some JD while smoking a cigar. Once solved a design for a function that most people, including me, said was next to impossible. A month of looking at it did no good; the JD did the trick.

I always find it helpful to know someone who can be a "blank wall" to
throw ideas at - I kind of believe the answer is rolling around in the
empty spaces of my skull and just need to get some air from outside -
not solutions, just oxygen!

I knew a programmer who took program listings to his old grandmother when

always presented itself. Granny was happy for the visit...
