I'm not finding any examples of this for either in the 'old' fixed format

IRECFORR
I AWField1 AVField1
I AWField2 AVField2

I'm wondering if there is a newer method of doing this in full **free
format, or are we stuck using this old method? Any kind of online article

There's no full **free support for I specs. You could put your I specs into a /copy file so the rest of your code could be in **FREE.

But I think you could use the PREFIX keyword to handle this particular situation, assuming you just want to change 'AW' to 'AV' for all the field names. You would code PREFIX('AW' : 2) on the DCL-F.

You could even get rid of the AW and AV from both files, by coding PREFIX('' : 2).
