This rang a bell with me
This is what I created
dcl-s Ix packed(7:0);
dcl-s Lengthoffield packed(7:0);

dcl-ds Rplcbadchards;
Completestring char(1000);
Completestringind char(1) dim(1000) pos(1);
end-ds;

Completestring = ChTxt;
Replacebadchar();
Chtxt = Completestring;

dcl-proc Replacebadchar ;

Ix = 1;
Lengthoffield = %len(%trimr(Completestring));
dou Ix > Lengthoffield;
if Completestringind(Ix) < ' ';
Completestringind(Ix) = ' ';
endif;
Ix += 1;
enddo;

end-proc ;

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Re: Remove unprintable chars

I think you can remove all chars below x’40’ because these are generally not printable, or used as display attributes.

The rest should work IMHO.

I'm preloading an old-school 5250 display file with data coming in from a
Windows app. Is there a good way to remove unprintable chars? The RPG
code is throwing a RNQ1251 (Permanent I/O error occurred in file &1). I
need to cleanse the data to prevent this.

FWIW, the current char is x'12', which is DC2 per the code page 37 chart.
