Here is how I do it.
resultsRows s 10i 0
results ds dim(9999) qualified
... my ds details go here
After your open...
resultsRows = %elem(results);
exec sql
fetch csr for :resultsRows rows into :results;
exec sql
get diagnostics :resultsRows = row_Count;
I have heard that the "get diagnostics" is somewhat CPU intensive and that
there is an SQL variable that will contain the value after the fetch but I
have never bothered to look into it.

I'm using dynamic because the file name is passed to the program.
The actual number of "repeating" fields is much larger than the five I am

The SQL pre-compiler complains:
SQL0312: Position 32 Variable CODES not defined or not usable. Reason:
No declaration for the variable exists, the declaration is not within the
current scope, or the variable does not have an equivalent SQL data type.
Is there a syntax that would work to populate the array?
