Hi Brigitta,
While I could add such a column to the target table... it will stay there forever (which I would just like to avoid).
I already had the idea of using a user index to store the mapping, this would avoid keeping the RRN in sync with the source table and which I can throw away once finished (ie. this is a temporary process so there's no issue about reorganizing the source table).
Kind regards,
Paul

IMHO the only way is to add a column and store the relative record no of the
old file in this additional field ... and later use the column instead of
the relative record no.
.. and what happens if ithe first file is reorganized? The relative record
no may have be changed!

To be short... I'm trying to replicate a file with respect of the RRN
numbers.
And to make it more complex... I can't replicate it in sequential order, but
it needs to be random.
And second... the files don't have the same layout.

The concept is that I don't know the file definition... ie. unique keys,

Even if it would work, once I write a dummy record I don't know if it is
"occupied" or not.
This is a very strange set of requirements you have. Can you describe at a
higher level what you are trying to do?
