Wouldn't you get an "Update without prior read or chain"?

My first boss said he'd fire someone if a customer called reporting that error....

S/38 and he vigorously promoted NOT using the cycle.

No. Exception output was always available and allowed sloppy programmers
to do crazy stuff, like reading a record once and updating it multiple
times without additional reads.
