Yes Jon.  Your timeline is right.
My timeline is basically when I seriously started to use certain RPG enhancements.
Regarding functions I dont mean the BIFs , I meant functions that one creates and make available to other programs.

But your timeline on RPG IV is way off Frank. It came out in V3R1 and included a few BIFs right from the get-go. In the next release (V3R2) subprocedures (i.e. functions) were introduced and people started developing libraries. CGIDEV was one of the early ones.

So RPG IV has had the notion of functions from the outset - some 30 years ago. It is constantly being enhanced but by no means is it attempting to be a tank!
