There are 3 Problems:
1. SELECT ... INTO cannot be executed dynamically
2. Host Variables cannot be specified in a dynamic SQL Statement, you either
have to embed the values into the string or you have to work with parameter
markers
3. SELECT Statements cannot be executed with EXECUTE IMMEDIATE
What you can do is to use a VALUES ... INTO Statement (with parameter
markers for the output fields).
PREPARE the statement and EXECUTE it-
String = 'Values(Select Count(*) from ' + %Trim(YourFile) + ') into ?;
Exec SQL Prepare DynStmt From :String;
Exec SQL Execute DynStmt Using :YourHostVar
BTW if you only want to know how many rows are in your table, you can get
this information directly from the SYSTABLESTAT catalog view:
Select Number_Rows
from QSYS2.SysTableStat
Where Table_Schema = 'YOURLIB'
and Table_Name = 'YOURFILE'
