thinking of something of the form



my_ind = (test > threshold);



No IF at all, but it's one line, which folks who don't know (or don't

like) that idiom would do like this:



if test > threshold;

my_ind = *on;

else;

my_ind = *off;

endif;



But if you really are thinking of a character variable, taking on

possibly 'Y' or 'N', then the custom subprocedure (function) approach

is the nicest I can think of. (Maybe some would say "use embedded SQL

instead".)
