There is an RFE out there for ternary if in RPG. Go and vote for it if you

If the variable being assigned was an indicator, then perhaps you are

thinking of something of the form

my_ind = (test > threshold);

No IF at all, but it's one line, which folks who don't know (or don't

like) that idiom would do like this:

if test > threshold;

my_ind = *on;

else;

my_ind = *off;

endif;

But if you really are thinking of a character variable, taking on

possibly 'Y' or 'N', then the custom subprocedure (function) approach

is the nicest I can think of. (Maybe some would say "use embedded SQL

instead".)
